IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is an assisted conception method where fertilisation occurs in a lab, where medications are given to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which are retrieved and fertilised with sperm. The resulting embryos grow for 5–6 days before being transferred into the uterus to try achieving pregnancy.

The success rate of IVF depends on many factors but primarily a woman’s age, as the egg quality and number declines as a woman gets older. 85% of couples conceive within 1 year of regular unprotected intercourse. It is usually advised to have a fertility assessment if you have been trying for a year or more without success. In women over 35 years or with conditions known to affect fertility (such as PCOS, endometriosis, irregular or absent periods), earlier assessment is recommended.
A fertility assessment involves a detailed history from both partners, followed by tailored investigations to identify potential fertility factors. These may include hormone blood tests to assess egg reserve and ovulation, a pelvic ultrasound to examine the uterus and ovaries, and a HyCoSy to check fallopian tube patency. A semen analysis is also recommended for male partners.
The first step is a fertility consultation to assess your egg reserve, discuss success rates, and determine how many eggs to freeze. The process involves taking injections to stimulate the ovaries, followed by ultrasound scans and blood tests throughout the cycle to monitor the follicular growth. After 10-14 days, of taking the injections, the eggs are collected under sedation and frozen using vitrification. The number of cycles it may take to get the optimum number of eggs will depend on you age and egg reserve. In the UK, frozen eggs can be legally stored for up to 55 years.

It's essential to discuss the benefits and risks with your specialist, as untreated anxiety or depression can have an adverse effect on the chances of conceiving and so receiving appropriate treatment, whether through psychological support or medications is crucial.
