Who should have a FibroScan?
You might not feel unwell, but you should consider a liver health review if you fall into any of these categories:
Overweight or high BMI
This group has the highest risk of metabolic liver disease. About 30% may have undiagnosed liver disease.
High blood pressure or high cholesterol
These conditions often go hand in hand with liver issues as part of "metabolic syndrome".
Taking GLP-1 medications
Accessing these medications without specialist supervision could mean your liver health isn't being properly checked.
Exceeding the alcohol limit
If you currently drink, or have previously drunk, more than 14 units of alcohol per week.
Abnormal liver blood tests
This includes people with abnormal liver blood tests or a scan showing fatty liver who received no further guidance.

Why standard tests aren't enough
Many patients rely on standard GP blood tests or ultrasounds, but these can be misleading:
Blood tests
There is often a "disconnect" between liver blood tests and actual damage. You can have relatively normal liver enzymes but still have significant scarring, or high enzymes with little damage.
Ultrasound
While an ultrasound can confirm you have a "fatty liver", it cannot accurately measure liver stiffness or scarring (fibrosis).
