Dr Melissa Hickson Biography

Dr Melissa Hickson is a UK-trained Consultant Radiologist with a specialist interest in breast and paediatric imaging. She completed her BSc with First Class Honours and Distinction, followed by her medical training at St Bartholomew's and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, graduating in 2009. She then completed her subspecialty training in radiology, and in 2016, she was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists. Dr Hickson undertook six months of dedicated breast imaging training at Luton and Dunstable Hospital before completing a one-year fellowship in Clinical Radiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. During her training, she published research in peer-reviewed journals and presented at several prestigious conferences at both national and international levels. She was appointed as a Consultant Radiologist in 2018. Dr Hickson specialises in the interpretation and reporting of all aspects of breast imaging, including mammograms, ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans. She is skilled in all breast-related interventional procedures, such as ultrasound and stereotactic techniques, including vacuum excisions and breast lesion localisation prior to surgery. In addition to her expertise in breast radiology, she also reports all modalities of paediatric imaging. As Breast Clinical Lead at Whittington Hospital, Dr Hickson combines clinical work with quality improvement initiatives. A dedicated medical educator, Dr Hickson serves as mentor and clinical supervisor to junior doctors. Notably, she helped develop the first Breast Fellowship Programme at The Whittington Hospital and has been awarded the Local Clinical Excellence Award multiple years. Known for her friendly, approachable, and empathetic demeanour, Dr Hickson is dedicated to delivering high-quality clinical care with a strong patient-focused approach.
